Dental Emergency Advice…

What to Do in Case of Dental Trauma or Injury

Individuals risk fracturing their teeth or causing other injuries to their mouths while eating, exercising, playing sports or other smilingly safe activities. Knowing what to do if you find yourself in that situation is important to your health and can lower the risk of complications and long term discomfort.  This includes seeking emergency dental care as soon as possible to repair the tooth & receive medication to alleviate the pain associated with dental trauma.

Broken or cracked teeth are some of the most common traumatic dental injuries and are usually associated with sporting activities where proper precautions weren’t taken, such as the
use of mouth guards or helmets when playing contact sports. Oral injuries are painful regardless of whether your teeth are natural or you are wearing dentures and should be treated as soon as possibly by your dentist.

What to Do If You have a Broken Tooth

If you have suffered a broken tooth and you are able to find the piece that broke off be sure to save it and take it to the dentist as in many instances it is possible to repair the tooth an avoid paying for a crown to reconstruct the tooth.  Do not allow the piece of broken tooth to dry out, use either milk or saliva to keep the tooth moist till you reach the dentist office. Children are especially susceptible to traumatic dental injuries and broken teeth; in many instances the break is beneath the gum line requiring an x-ray to determine the severity of the break.

Dental abscess is another common dental emergency. An abbess usually presents as a lump or bulge on the side of the gum. There is not always pain associated with the abscess, but it is important it be treated as soon as possible to avoid permanent damage to the tooth.

Dental emergencies are unavoidable at times, but it is important to know how to react if and when they present themselves. Quick action can help you avoid more serious complications & discomfort in the future.
