Types Of Dental Emergencies To Be Aware Of

There are several types of dental emergencies to be aware of, and for each of them we recommend that you call us as soon as possible upon the occurrence of them. In some cases, the more time that you delay before calling us, the more likely it is that your tooth will not be able to be saved. We can advise you on preparatory steps to take as you prepare for your visit to our office.

Many dental emergencies occur as a result of some trauma that you experience. These can include such things as teeth that are cracked, chipped, or broken, teeth that have been knocked completely out of the mouth, dislodged or loosened teeth, and injuries to your gums or other soft tissues of the mouth. At other times the emergency can result in fillings or crowns becoming dislodged or knocked out, braces can be knocked loose, or objects can become lodged between the teeth.

Dental emergencies do not always result from trauma however. Infections can occur and abscesses can form. These latter should be taken very seriously as they can be potentially life threatening. Abscesses are infections that usually occur around the root of the tooth, or in between the tooth and gum. They can result in damaged tissue and teeth. If left untreated, the infection can spread to other parts of the body. It will often present as a pimple-like swelling on your gum and will be painful. If you believe you may have an abscess, you need to call us right away for an evaluation. You can relieve the pain somewhat, and help the pus to move to the surface, by rinsing your mouth with a mild salt water solution several times per day before you arrive at our office.

Every dental emergency warrants a call to our office. We are always happy to advise you on the proper steps to take following an emergency that has occurred. Be prepared to provide us with all the detail about your emergency so that we can make the best recommendation for follow up treatment and can schedule you to visit our office as soon as possible. In some cases, such as the loss of a tooth, your best chances of saving your tooth are within the first hour of the injury occurring. Please keep this in mind and do not delay contacting us.
