Types Of Dental Emergencies To Be Aware Of

There are many types of dental emergencies and the way that you respond to each of them will determine the type of treatment we will have to provide once you have arrived at our office.  In all cases the most important thing is to contact us so that we can advice you on what initial steps to take following your emergency.  Here are a few of the types of emergencies that you may experience.

Toothaches can occur for many reasons. It is important to determine if the tooth pain could be caused by something lodged in between your teeth. If so, you can use floss to try to remove it. Do not treat your pain by applying any type of pain medication directly to the tooth or the gum near it as this can cause burning of the gum.  You can take Ibuprofen or other pain medication for your toothache.  If the pain is the result of an injury to your mouth, avoid taking aspirin as it can lead to additional bleeding.

You can also chip, break, or knock your tooth out completely. Any tooth fragments that can be recovered should be picked up immediately.  If you knock your tooth completely out, handle it by the crown and not the root.  Keep the tooth, or fragments of the tooth, moist by wrapping it and submerging it in milk. Your best chances that we’ll be successful at reattaching your tooth will be if you are able to arrive at our office within one hour of the injury.

If you partially dislodge your tooth, apply a cold compress and take pain medication if necessary. You will need to arrive at our office as soon as possible to be treated, preferably within an hour of the injury.

Other dental emergencies that can occur are: an abscess can form and is usually accompanied with a significant amount of pain (this is a serious condition that needs medical attention right away), you can injure the soft tissues of your mouth, and crowns and fillings can be knocked out or loosened.

Dental emergencies can be very frightening to those that experience them.  The best thing is to keep calm and to take steps to prepare for your visit to our office.  Keeping a level head during a dental emergency can increase the likelihood of saving your tooth.  You should always call us right away if you have any kind of dental emergency, even if you do not feel it is significant.  We can evaluate your situation, advise you on steps to take, and schedule your appointment for treatment right away.
